20 million euros to support alternative modes of transport to roads
The Government of Wallonia has just renewed its Aid Plan for alternative modes of transport for the period 2021-2025. It will enter into force on 1 January 2021, with an annual budget of €4 million over 5 years.
The Government will use this Plan to respond to several concerns, including that of encouraging business investment in the development and use of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport.
Wallonia, which is ideally located at the heart of European transport networks and the largest industrial and consumer basin in Europe (60 million consumers can be reached within three hours by road), dedicates a large budget each year to modernising its river network.
Willy Borsus, Minister of the Economy
It is essential that we encourage companies to load more goods onto rail- and waterways in Wallonia, increase the transport of containers by inland waterway and modernise the Walloon inland waterway fleet, which emits two to three times less CO2 per tonne transported than road transport

The new "Walloon Plan 2021-2025" aims to encourage the loading of goods onto railways or waterways by awarding investment grants for the purchase of high-performance handling equipment:
- premium for the transport of containers by inland waterway
- investment premium for the acquisition of goods transhipment equipment
- premium for the technical adaptation of the Walloon inland waterway fleet
